European and international police agencies announced the takedown of an encrypted phone network built exclusively for criminal clientele, in an operation coordinated by Europol with Interpol support.
The platform sold hardened handsets with remote-wipe panic features and subscription-based encrypted messaging, marketed through word of mouth in organized crime circles. At its peak it served tens of thousands of users.
Investigators covertly intercepted message traffic for months before the takedown, harvesting evidence of drug trafficking, money laundering and violence-for-hire plots. Hundreds of investigations across multiple countries are now drawing on the intercepted material.
The operation echoes previous takedowns of criminal communication platforms, which collectively reshaped how organized crime communicates and how police infiltrate those channels.
